BFI Announces Team for Women’s World Championship; Lovlina Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen book your berth

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain and 2019 Asian Championships bronze medalist Nikhat Zareen sealed their places at this year’s IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in the selection trials held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here on Wednesday. .

In the light middleweight (70kg) category, Lovlina defeated Arundhati Chaudhary of Rajasthan 7-0. Lovlina showed her experience, ring craft and used her long range brilliantly as she continued to score and spun around the ring without giving her young opponent much chance to secure her World Championship spot.

Nikhat, who won gold at last month’s Strandja Memorial Tournament, where she defeated Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Busenaz Kakiroglu, defeated Meenakshi by a unanimous margin in the flyweight (52kg) category. Nikhat won comfortably and displayed his skills with excellent combinations and punches throughout the bout.

Tokyo Olympian and 2018 World Championships bronze medalist Simranjit Kaur was defeated by 2021 Asian Championships bronze medalist Jasmine 2-5 in a split decision in the 60kg category to qualify for the World Championships as well as the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Jasmine used her long range and played from afar and hit accurate punches throughout the bout.

The winners in the three weight categories – 57 kg, 60 kg and 75 kg – in the trials qualified for both the World Championships as well as the Asian Games.

Simranjeet was attacking relentlessly but Jasmine did not let her opponent dominate her and showed great tactical skill and footwork.

In the 48kg category, a two-time youth world champion and gold medalist at the recently concluded Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria, Neetu defeated Monika 6-1 to seal her place in the World Championship squad.

Manisha Maun also celebrated twins as she booked her tickets for both the Asian Games as well as the World Championships by defeating 2014 World Championships silver medalist Sonia Lather 6-1 in the featherweight (57kg) category.

Manisha is a bronze medalist of the 2019 Asian Championships, having represented India at the 2018 World Championships in Delhi.

In the 75kg weight category, Sweety defeated Kachari Bhagyabati of RSPB 5-2 to confirm her place in the Indian squad for both the World Championships and the Asian Games.

In the 81kg light heavyweight category, Tokyo Olympic quarter-finalist Pooja Rani defeated Nupur 6-1 to qualify for the World Championships.

Ankushita Boro defeated Anjali Tushar 7-0 in the welterweight (66kg) category, while Nandini defeated Sushma by an equal margin in the heavyweight (81+kg) category to secure her place in the World Championship squad.

The IBA Women’s Boxing Championships is scheduled to be held in Istanbul from May 6-21, while the Asian Games will be hosted by China’s Hangzhou from September 10-25.

Trials for the remaining two categories – 51kg and 69kg – for the Asian Games will be held from March 11-14.
