Bihar government to introduce compulsory sports period, ‘no-bag day’ in schools

Bihar government has decided to implement ‘No Bag Day’ rule in schools with compulsory sports period at least once a week to ease the burden on students. The policy is being brought in to involve students in activities that can positively impact their learning.

Talking to news agency PTI, Additional Chief Secretary of Education Department Deepak Kumar Singh said that a notification to this effect will be issued soon.

On the “no-bag day”, Singh said that the weekly no-bag day would have practical classes. “At least once a week, students will come to schools with their own lunch boxes. They do not need to carry books. The day will be dedicated to practical and experiential learning,” he said.

“School authorities should prepare curriculum for such activities. This step will surely bring about a positive change in the students, which will also improve their learning ability. Enthused by the impressive performance of our students in regional, national and international sporting events We will start compulsory sports. Period in schools,” Singh added.

Singh says that the new initiative of the state government is in line with the National Education Policy 2022 and will be implemented in private and government schools.

Once on compulsory sports period, Bihar State Art, Culture and Youth Minister Jitendra Kumar Rai said, “Our department is preparing a proposal in this regard. I will meet the education minister of the state and submit a detailed proposal to him.”

Claiming that the authorities want sports to be a mandatory part of the academic curriculum, Rai said, “If the sports period is introduced in schools, we will be able to identify talent at a very early stage. The government will accordingly Will prepare them for state, national and international sporting events,”

Rai says it is a ‘proud’ for Bihar that players from the state have performed exceptionally well in international and national sports, while athletes from Bihar won six medals in the recently concluded Arnis Games World Championships in the Philippines. Huh.

Chandan Kumar Singh of the eastern state won a lawn ball medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, while Sharad Kumar of Muzaffarpur created history by winning the state’s first Paralympic medal by finishing third in the men’s high jump F42 category at the Tokyo Para Games.

Athletes are given sports kits according to their condition, and a grant-in-aid to be used in the National Institute of Sports’ curriculum for treatment and enrollment in national level sporting events in the state, the minister says. They said that In 2020-21, 70 athletes were given Rs 21.02 lakh as grant-in-aid.
