Bilaterals can ‘squeeze’ with longer duration for league like IPL: ICC President Barkley | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Bilateral competitions between international teams could be “squeezed” if the window for T20 leagues like the one IPL long go on, ICC President Greg Barkley said on Friday.
With the addition of two teams this season, the IPL has been extended to 74 games in a span of two months as compared to 60 matches last season.
Asked how to strike a balance between the IPL and the international calendar, Barkley said, “It’s a good question. Some domestic leagues like the IPL and probably some others will both increase the scoping scale and have new leagues.”
“But they are the sovereign domain of the members, domestic competitions, they can run as they wish. But more events, and the longer duration through those events means there is going to be a squeeze, we know there are only 365 days a day. year…
“So if there are more domestic leagues that are attracted to players, then something has to go and I don’t think there are ICC events, that happen every year, and there are more teams in those events, so they’re going to take a long time.” So, the little that gets squeezed out is the bilateral arrangement,” Barclay told PTI in an interaction here.
The ICC President, however, heaped praise on the IPL, saying he likes the cash-rich league.
“The first thing I would say after not being able to travel after two years, it is great to be back in India. And so good for my first journey with the IPL – the semifinals and the final coming up.
“So, I love IPL, it’s a great competition and I think India and BCCI Have done something amazing with cricket. It is a spectacle that I am honored to be able to go along and watch and be a part of. Credit to the country,” he said.
Barkley On ICC Media Rights
After getting the IPL rights for the 2024-2031 cycle, the ICC will issue a media rights tender.
“Well, hopefully, I’m quite excited that there is interest in the rights. I think there are some very credible parties that I think will be able to work with the ICC and they are all involved in the development of cricket.” Will be able to make a positive contribution.”
“Our process is not like that of BCCI. We have process that we have strong capability internally, we have also consulted outside, so I am comfortable that the way we are approaching media rights tender is probably the best process for ICC at this point of time Is.
“It is an exciting time to be involved in cricket, there is a lot of interest in our sport, there is a lot of potential to grow both in new markets, existing markets and especially around the women’s game, which is extremely exciting.
Asked if the ICC is looking at staggering the process for TV and digital rights on the lines of the BCCI, he said, “So I expect the process to generate a lot of interest.”
He also said that ICC rights would be chosen at a “fair price”.
ICC has allotted 2025 Champions Trophy to Pakistan And Barkley defended the decision.
“Geopolitical events are far beyond my (control). There is a risk that India may not be able to participate in that event, but hopefully we will not have to face that issue when it comes along.
“…and the Pakistan part is important because the teams are fortunately going back there now and it is an important place of development. It was a deliberate strategy to keep that event in Pakistan,” he signed off.
