When the first man set out for space, mankind could hardly have expected that by the end of 2021, space tourism would become a booming industry in the world. Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first person to go into space. On April 12, 1961, on the Vostok 1 spacecraft, Gagarin was accompanied by a 27-year-old test pilot and industrial technician. According to NASA, Gagarin made a 108-minute orbital flight in his Vostok 1 spacecraft. Within a span of another month, Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American to go into space. The first Indian to go to space was Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, a former Indian Air Force pilot who flew to space on 3 April 1984 in a Soyuz T-11 as part of the Soviet Intercosmos programme. Since then, we’ve come a long way in space travel, with the world’s billionaires now moving in for what feels like every other week. Space tourism is now a booming industry, but in the olden days this feat of Sharma was an extraordinary first for the country.
Between 2001 and 2009, seven space tourists achieved a similar feat. He flew to the International Space Station aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, brokered by Space Adventures with Roscosmos and RSC Energia. On July 11 and July 20 this year, two billionaires, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos, made the first of their kind spacewalks with an all-citizen crew. This means that, unlike in the 20th century, location is no longer exclusive to governments. Here are some of the citizens who went to space in 2021.
Richard Branson, Sirisha Bandala and others
On July 11, Richard Branson, the 70-year-old British billionaire, flew to space on board what can only be called an ambitious project that became a reality in Virgin Galactic’ Unity 22 spaceflight. Branson said during the live feed, “Congratulations to all our amazing team at Virgin Galactic for 17 years of hard work as the VSS Unity spaceship sailed back to Spaceport America in New Mexico. It reached peak altitude. About 53 miles (85 kilometres), allowing travelers to experience weightlessness and admire the curvature of the Earth, beyond the limits of space according to the United States.
Sirisha Bandla became the second Indian-born woman to fly in space. She was one of six astronauts aboard Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity, which launched into space from New Mexico on July 11. After achieving this feat, Bandla said, “I am taking a little part of India with me there.”

On July 20, a Blue Origin capsule carrying Jeff Bezos, his younger brother Mark, an 82-year-old female pilot, and a high school graduate touched down in the desert of West Texas after violating the limits of space, according to the company’s report. Shown in live broadcast.

In September, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying four space tourists took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday night for the first mission to orbit the world with an all-citizen crew. Citizens included Jared Isaacman, Founder and CEO of Shift4Payments; Hayley Arsinox, a 29-year-old child cancer survivor and physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; Chris Sambrowski, data engineer at aerospace giant Lockheed Martin Corp. in Everett, Washington; and Dr. Sean Proctor, an entrepreneur, educator, trained pilot and active voice in the space exploration community.
Russian film actor
Russia sent a film crew including the famous Russian actor, Yulia Peresild, and the director, Klim Shipenko, to shoot a film called ‘Vyzov’. She became the first professional actress to visit the International Space Station. The crew spent 12 days in the film’s ISS shooting scenes. Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, also sent a celebrity into space, although the period was not as long as that of Russian actors. William Shatner, best known for playing Captain Kirk in the science-fiction, Star Trek, spent some time on New Shepard, the limit of space, beyond the Karman Line.
Yusaku Maezawa and an Uber Eats delivery
Uber Eats recently made history by delivering food into space. Together with Japanese fashion tycoon Yusaku Maezawa, the company sent ready-to-eat canned Japanese food to astronauts on the International Space Station. Yusaku went to outer space in a Soyuz spacecraft for a 12-day mission aboard the International Space Station. The spacecraft, accompanied by the Japanese billionaire, was carrying a special package by Uber Eats, a brown bag containing canned Japanese dishes.
