A BJP leader, who described Bilkis Bano’s rapists as “sanskari Brahmins”, is in the party’s list of candidates for next month’s Gujarat elections.
Former Gujarat minister Chandrasinh Raulji is the BJP candidate from Godhra. He is a six-time Godhra MLA.
Before the last Gujarat elections, Chandrasinh Raulji switched from Congress to BJP in August 2017.
He was part of the Gujarat government committee that unanimously decided to release 11 people convicted of raping Bilkis Bano and killing nine members of his family, including his three-year-old daughter.
In an interview aired on social media, Mr. Raulji was heard telling a reporter for Mojo Story, “They were Brahmins and Brahmins are known to have good manners. Maybe it is someone’s wrong intention and they have to be punished.” “
He also said that the conduct of the convicts in the jail was good.
The rapists were freed on 15 August Independence Day and welcomed with flowers and sweets by a right-wing group.
