BJP chief JP Nadda resigns as Rajya Sabha MP from HP, to continue from Gujarat

Bharatiya Janata Party National President Jagat Prakash Nadda on 4 March resigned from his position as Rajya Sabha MP and his resignation has been accepted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. 

Nadda represented the state of Himachal Pradesh in the Upper House of the Parliament. With his resignation, now the seat has become vacant with effect from 4 March.

The Rajya Sabha press release said, “Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, an elected Member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), representing the State of Himachal Pradesh, resigned his seat in Rajya Sabha and his resignation has been accepted by the Chairman, Rajya Sabha w.e.f. 4th March, 2024.”

Last month in February, JP Nadda was elected to the upper house from Gujarat unopposed and was among 57 Rajya Sabha members whose tenure was ending in April. He will now continue as Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat. 

Jagat Prakash Nadda was among the 41 candidates who won seats unopposed in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha elections ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Nadda was nominated as the party’s candidate from Gujarat, which sent four BJP candidates to the upper house.

Meanwhile, his term as BJP president has been extended till June.

Earlier, Nadda served as the Union Health Minister from 2014 to 2019 and became BJP’s National President on January 20, 2020.

In the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls, BJP won the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh, despite the state being governed by Congress.

BJP’s Harsh Mahajan was elected as the Rajya Sabha MP, defeating the Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi based on a draw of lots after a tie between both the candidates with 34 votes each.

The BJP had only 25 MLAs in the hill state but has benefitted from cross-voting.
