BJP, Congress criticize Soros for ‘Indian democracy’ remark

New Delhi The Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress on Friday hit out at George Soros, a day after the billionaire philanthropist targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a public event.

However, rival parties had different reasons for slamming Soros, who said the Adani Group controversy would weaken Modi and lead to a “democratic resurgence in India”.

BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani on Friday accused Soros of trying to defame India’s democracy.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said whether the Adani issue sparks a democratic revival depends entirely on the opposition parties, and has nothing to do with Soros.

Addressing the Munich Security Conference on Thursday, Soros claimed a report by Hindenburg Research, which accused the Adani group of stock manipulation and fraud, would harm Modi politically. He said, “Modi and business tycoon Adani are close associates and their fortunes are intertwined… Modi is silent on the subject, but he will have to answer questions from foreign investors and in Parliament.” “I may be naïve, but I expect a democratic resurgence in India.”

Women and Child Development Minister Irani said, “The man who broke the Bank of England and was named as an economic war criminal by a nation has now expressed his desire to break Indian democracy.

Soros wants a government that suits his needs and this is evident from his statements that he has announced funding of over $1 billion specifically targeting leaders like PM Modi.

In a tweet, Ramesh said, “Whether or not the Adani scam involving the Prime Minister leads to a democratic revival in India entirely depends on the Congress, the opposition parties and our electoral process. This has nothing to do with George Soros.” He added: “Our Nehruvian heritage ensures that people like Soros cannot dictate our election results.”
