Four days after violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, a BJP leader was arrested today for his derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad. Police said that BJP youth wing office-bearer Harshit Srivastava was trying to spoil the atmosphere through his objectionable posts.

Kanpur Police Commissioner Vijay Meena said, “Whoever tries to play with religious sentiments, we will take action against them.”

Violence broke out in parts of Kanpur after Friday prayers, as members of two groups clashed and markets were closed against BJP leader Nupur Sharma in protest against her remarks against Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate at Gyanvapi Masjid. The BJP on Sunday suspended Ms Sharma and expelled Delhi unit’s media chief Naveen Jindal for her remarks on the Prophet. The remarks drew an overwhelming response from around the world and the controversial comments were condemned by 16 countries.

On Monday, Kanpur Police had released posters containing 40 photographs of those allegedly involved in the violence. The police are said to have collected photographs of the alleged accused through several videos of the incident, including those captured on CCTV and mobile phones.

More than 50 people, including the main accused Zafar Hayat, have been arrested so far and a case has been registered against over 1,500 named and unidentified people in connection with the violence in which over 40 were injured.
