BJP Ministers File Nominations For Upcoming Karnataka Assembly Elections

BJP’s sitting ministers Murugesh Nirani, Dr K Sudhakar, ST Somashekar and V Sunil Kumar were among those who filed their nomination papers for the Karnataka assembly elections on Thursday.

The voting process for the May 10 assembly elections formally began today, with the issuance of a gazette notification paving the way for candidates to file nominations.

Mr Nirani is contesting from Bilgi in Bagalkot, Sudhakar from Chikkaballapur, Sunil Kumar from Karkala in Udupi and Somashekhar from Yeshwanthpur constituency in Bengaluru.

Similarly, SS Mallikarjuna, who is trying his luck on a Congress ticket from Davangere North, also filed his papers.

According to the Election Commission, 27 candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party, 26 from the Congress, 10 from the Janata Dal (S), 10 from the Aam Aadmi Party and one from the Bahujan Samaj Party filed their nominations. Nominations were filed by 100 unrecognized parties and 45 independent candidates.

A total of 221 nominations were filed on the day the notification for the assembly elections was issued, the Election Commission statement said.

As per the Election Commission’s schedule, the last date for filing nominations is April 20. The scrutiny of papers will be done on April 21 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 24.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the cumulative seizure reached Rs 144 crore after the Model Code of Conduct came into force from March 29.

The total seizure includes cash worth Rs 57.37 crore, free items worth Rs 17.93 crore, liquor worth Rs 32 crore, drugs worth Rs 13.2 crore, gold worth Rs 21.27 crore and silver worth Rs 2.56 crore.
