BJP Wins Chandigarh Mayor’s Race By 1 Vote “Illegally Elected,” Says AAP

AAP opposes Chandigarh mayoral race results as BJP defeated it by one vote

Chandigarh:

The Aam Aadmi Party has claimed a “shocking death to democracy” after BJP leader – Municipal Councilor Sarabjit Kaur – was declared the winner of the mayoral race in Chandigarh yesterday, defeating AAP’s Anju Katyal by one vote.

Sarabjit Kaur and Anju Katyal both got 14 out of 28 votes, but the former was declared the winner after one vote in favor of Anju Katyal was invalid.

AAP on Saturday tweeted, “Shocking death of democracy. DC (District Collector) illegally elected BJP mayor despite AAP winning more seats. Senior AAP leaders are waiting outside his office, but now He refused to meet her.”

AAP’s Punjab MLA Jarnail Singh also hit out at the attempt to “murder democracy”.

“Congress councilors joined the BJP directly after the number of seats in the BJP decreased. Even after that, the BJP took help from the bureaucracy when the number of votes fell short. This is an attempt to kill democracy by misrepresenting the right votes. Effort.” Quoted by news agency ANI.

Mr Singh claimed that the mayoral election results were evidence of “a secret understanding between the BJP and the Congress” to defeat the AAP.

The Aam Aadmi Party hung after a stellar performance in 14 of the 35 wards in the Chandigarh civic polls announced last week. BJP won 12, Congress eight and Akali Dal one.

In the race for the mayor’s election, only 28 of the 36 available votes were cast as seven Congress councilors and the lone Akali representative remained absent.

The BJP’s vote count increased by one after Congress’s Harpreet Kaur Babla and her husband, a former vice-president of the party’s local unit, joined the BJP on January 2. The 14th vote was of Lok Sabha MP Kirron Kher, who is eligible. Voting as an ex-officio member of the Municipal Corporation.

AAP thought it had 14 votes too, but after one was declared invalid, the BJP candidate was declared the winner of the race. After this, AAP members reached near the mayor’s chair and staged a dharna and created a ruckus. He also tried to prevent the new mayor from addressing the House.

The BJP also won the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor; Congress and Akali refrained from voting in these elections as well.

Dalip Sharma of BJP won the Senior Deputy Mayor seat by defeating Prem Lata of AAP by 15 votes to 13 votes. Mr. Sharma managed to get even one vote from the AAP councillor.

Anoop Gupta was declared deputy mayor after a draw as he and AAP’s Ram Chander Yadav got 14-14 votes.
