MUMBAI: In keeping with the tradition in Maharashtra, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Murji Patel has withdrawn his candidature for the Andheri East bypoll, the party’s state unit president Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced in Nagpur on Monday.
“BJP is all set for this election and we can get the required number of votes and win this election. However, if an MLA has passed away and his relative is contesting, then it Maharashtra’s tradition is to allow a person to be elected unopposed,” Bawankule said.

He said, “The BJP has maintained this tradition many times in the past. The newly elected MLA will get around 1.5 years’ time. Hence the party has decided to withdraw its candidate. This decision has been taken by the Center and the state leadership. And I thank Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Mumbai unit president Ashish Shelar for taking it up.

On Saturday, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray met Shinde at his official residence Varsha and on Sunday he made an emotional appeal to Fadnavis.
He also released his letter on social media.
After Bawankule’s announcement, Raj Thackeray immediately issued a letter of thanks to “his friend” Fadnavis in which he [profusely] He thanked the latter as well as the BJP and other leaders for heeding his appeal.
He said, “A good, positive political culture is essential for a healthy society. As MNS, we are always trying to inculcate such a political culture and allow political parties to take their political issues on a political platform. and there should be fair competition.”
Raj Thackeray thanks Fadnavis
Later, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray thanked Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis for the BJP’s decision to withdraw its candidate.
In a letter to Fadnavis, Thackeray described the senior BJP leader as his “dear friend” and said it is important to have a positive political culture.
He said that Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is always in favor of spreading such a positive culture.
“I am grateful that you have responded to this (appeal),” Thackeray said.
