Days before voting in West Bengal’s Mednipur constituency, son of an active BJP worker from the Goramahal village of the district, was found hanging on Thursday night. This comes amidst the second phase of the ongoing polls in three constituencies of North Bengal.

The state BJP has claimed that the deceased, identified as 18-year-old Dinabandhu (Dhananjay) Midya, was ‘hanged to death by TMC goons’.

Voting in the Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled to take place on May 25. The BJP has fielded Agnimitra Paul from the constituency against TMC’s June Maliah.

According to the claims made by the saffron party,  multiple signs of injury was found on the victim’s body.

Polling is currently underway in three constituencies located in the northern part of West Bengal — Darjeeling, Raiganj and Balurghat.  The ruling TMC has claimed that the central forces deployed to ensure free and fair elections in the state have unleashed brutal assault on the voters of Balurghat constituency.

Several incidents of violence marred the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Bengal and a voter turnout of 77% was noted till 5 pm. Several injuries were also reported as TMC and BJP workers clashed mostly in the violence-prone Cooch Behar seat.
