BJP’s 3/3: Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya keep reunion with ally

Assembly Election Results 2023: BJP leading in 28 seats in Tripura.

New Delhi:
The BJP and its allies seem set to score a perfect three in the recent elections held in the northeastern states. It has won Tripura and is close to winning Nagaland. It may also form the government in Meghalaya, renewing its alliance with Konrad Sang.

Here’s Your 10-Point Cheatsheet for This Big Story

  1. The BJP-IPFT (Indigenous Progressive Front of Tripura) alliance returned to power in Tripura by winning 33 of the state’s 60 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “The double engine government will continue to work for the progress of the state. I commend my party workers for their hard work, which ensured this result.”

  2. However, the alliance’s score is 11 less than in 2018, when the BJP alone won 36 seats and the IPFT eight.

  3. Tipra Motha of the then royal Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who made his debut in this election, won 13 seats. The party, which has been pushing for a Greater Tipperaland, seems to have captured the tribal support of the IPFT.

  4. Meghalaya was headed for a hung house when Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, whose National People’s Party is in the fray, called Amit Shah, the BJP’s chief strategist. The two parties had decided to go it alone following a spat over Mr Sangma’s allegations of corruption against the NPP.

  5. BJP’s representative in the Northeast and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Meghalaya Chief Minister Shri Sangma Konrad called Hon’ble Home Minister Amit Shah ji and sought his support and blessings to form the new government.”

  6. Sources said Sangma and Sarma had a meeting in Guwahati yesterday where the alliance was discussed. Together the two parties are leading on 28 seats – just short of the halfway mark of 31 in the 60-member House.

  7. “We will wait for the final results and then decide how to move forward,” Sangma had told reporters.

  8. The Left, which ruled the state for 35 years, and its new ally Congress are leading in 14 seats from two.

  9. Meghalaya’s new entrant Trinamool Congress is leading in five seats, defying exit poll predictions.

  10. In Nagaland, the BJP and its ally NDPP (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party) are leading on 37 seats – seven more than last time. The state has also got a woman legislator – a first since independence.
