BJP’s Jairam Thakur accepts defeat, submits resignation to Governor

The outgoing Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Jairam Thakur said on Thursday that he would submit his resignation to the Governor in a short while from now.

“I respect people’s mandate and I want to thank the PM and other central leadership for the last 5 years. We will stand for the development of the state apart from politics. We will analyze our shortcomings and improve in the next term, Thakur said.

By this afternoon – after four hours of counting – the grand old party seemed to have an edge over the BJP as Election Commission data showed it was leading in 37 constituencies – two more than the required majority.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has called a meeting of all its newly-elected MLAs in Himachal Pradesh in Chandigarh after today’s results were announced, and the meeting is likely to pass a resolution authorizing the Congress president to elect the CLP leader .

As the trends indicated a comfortable victory for the grand old party in Himachal Pradesh, Shukla said that the party was happy that it was getting the opportunity to form the government in the state and insisted that the party would fulfill the 10 guarantees given to the state. Will do everything to make ends meet. Will provide better governance to the people and people of the state.

Reports suggested that the legislators are expected to pass a one-line resolution authorizing the Congress president to decide the CLP leader. He said that this has been the tradition in the Congress party.

“The party is sending two observers – Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and senior leader Bhupinder Hooda – with me. We will go to Chandigarh sometime later today, where all party MLAs have been called,” Shukla said.

Talking to reporters, he said, “The election result trends are a matter of happiness for us and we are moving towards getting around 40 seats. We are confident that we are getting a chance to get power in Himachal.”

Shukla further said that Priyanka Gandhi took the reins of the campaign in her own hands and did a great job with it.

He also thanked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and general secretary organization KC Venugopal for their cooperation in election preparations.

He said that Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra has also had an indirect impact on the elections and among the people.

While Shukla is in-charge of AICC Himachal Pradesh, Baghel was appointed senior observer for the elections.
