Speaking to News18, the former Tripura chief minister also expressed confidence that the ruling BJP would win the February 16 elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appointed Biplab Deb, a first-time MLA, as chief minister after registering a landslide victory in the Left bastion Tripura in the 2018 assembly elections. However, in May 2022, it replaced him with Manik Saha. Deb is now a Rajya Sabha member and is in charge of his party’s Haryana affairs.

As the BJP seeks to retain power in Tripura in the February 16 elections for the state’s 60 assembly seats, Deb, in an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, gives his assessment of the situation on the ground, various allegations by the opposition, And talked about. How does he see his role in the party? Edited excerpts:

What is your feeling about the elections?

Everyone in the Northeast is now dreaming of a better future. In 2018, we created history in Tripura by uprooting the Left. In the last 5 years, we have worked very hard and we have developed everywhere. People want to make their future better and more stable. So, I think people will vote for us.

The opposition says that the law and order situation has been bad ever since the BJP came to power after the Lenin statue was vandalised, and it is continuing. What is your Opinion?

Lenin’s statue was not broken in our government. We took oath on 10 March 2018. The incident took place when Manik Sarkar was the caretaker chief minister. He should know.

The opposition says that after that many party offices were demolished.

All of them encroached upon government land and built party offices. We dismantled those offices and returned them to the government. He went to court and lost. This is a false narrative of the communists. Communists who were “strong” have become “forced”. They are not even contesting on 60 seats.

You talked about law and order. The measure of law and order is women’s safety. Tripura has a large number of women in politics, 10 percent of women in the force, and a 25 percent reduction in crimes against women. This shows that women are safe here.

You are not the Chief Minister. do you feel bad about it?

Who am I? I had no identity. The party made me the state president. I could not do much for my party but I am young. I will give my life and work for this party. I was a common man and the party gave me the ticket. I became an MLA for the first time, he made me the Chief Minister and then a Rajya Sabha member. I see Haryana. How much more will they do for me? I can give my life for the party.

What do you have to say about Tipra Motha?

Motha has to rely on Modiji. We are doing tribal development. You can see the road and railway work done in this area. From here a road leads to Myanmar. People know that; Let’s wait for the results.

How many seats are you expecting?

I’m not an astrologer, so can’t say. But we know that the BJP will win the elections.
