Black ink, deadly attack cannot suppress voice of farmers: Rakesh Tikait

Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait has said that “black ink and deadly attack” cannot suppress the voices of farmers and laborers after they threw ink at them in Bengaluru. Three people were arrested after miscreants threw ink on a ticket during an event organized by a farmers’ organization at Gandhi Bhavan in Karnataka’s capital on Monday.

After this, the organizers and the miscreants attacked each other with plastic chairs. Tikait has blamed the local police for the incident and alleged that the attack was carried out in connivance with the BJP-led state government.

“Black ink and deadly attacks cannot suppress the voice of farmers, labourers, dalits, oppressed, backward and tribals of this country. The fight will continue till the last breath,” the farmer leader tweeted in Hindi late Monday night. Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra has rubbished allegations that Tikait was targeted by a BJP leader.

“We are in touch with the officials. Three people have been arrested and are being questioned. I condemn this act. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression under the constitution.

According to the organisers, the event, which also included a press conference, was called after a sting operation against farmer leader Kodihalli Chandrasekhar “cleared suspicion”, and Tikait was invited to it.

In the meeting, the miscreants appeared in the crowd as journalists and pretended to take notes. One of them went on stage to adjust the microphone in front of Tikait and then tried to attack him with the mic. Another man threw ink on the tikait, revealing his turban, face, white kurta and a green shawl around his neck.

Opposition parties including Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal condemned the incident and demanded immediate police action against the culprits. Tikait, a vocal critic of the BJP, was one of the prominent faces of the 2020 farmers’ protest against the three central agri-marketing laws that have now been repealed. Tikait’s BKU was part of the United Kisan Morcha (SKM), which had held protests against the Center on the borders of Delhi for over a year.
