Black Sea: Russian Navy begins major Black Sea exercise – Times of India

Moscow: RussiaThe Navy started a massive exercise on Saturday in Black Sea Even what Moscow dismissed as “hysteria” is a US warning that a Russian attack Ukraine Could start in days.
“More than 30 ships of the Black Sea Fleet took to sea off Sebastopol and Novorossiysk as per the exercise plan,” the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday morning.
“The purpose of the exercise is to protect the coast of the Crimean peninsula, the bases of the forces of the Black Sea Fleet, as well as the country’s economic sector from potential military threats,” the ministry said.
The move comes after the US issued its strongest warning yet about a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, saying it could happen “any day now”.
white House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that such an attack would be triggered by airstrikes and missile strikes and urged Americans in Ukraine to leave the country “as soon as possible”.
Several EU countries have also urged their citizens to leave Ukraine.
Moscow took a dig at US warnings.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Telegram: “The White House frenzy is revealing more than ever. The Anglo-Saxons need war. At any cost. Provocations, propaganda and threats to solve their problems.” His favorite method.”
Russia’s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, told Newsweek magazine that the US warning was “dangerous” and reiterated that his country was “not going to attack anyone.”
Russia has raised thousands of troops to Ukraine’s borders in recent months, raising fears that it plans to invade its former Soviet neighbor eight years after Ukraine annexed the Crimean peninsula.
Russia has denied any such plans, making several demands from the West, including a ban on Ukraine’s joining the Western defense alliance NATO.
Amid the uproar, Russia last month announced a series of naval exercises in the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in “waters and seas adjacent to Russian territory”.
More than 140 warships and auxiliary ships, more than 60 aircraft, 1,000 pieces of military hardware and a total of more than 10,000 soldiers are involved in the exercise, the Defense Ministry said on Saturday.
Tensions in the Black Sea have risen in recent years, with Moscow accusing Ukraine’s Western government and Western powers of endangering its security in Crimea’s waters.
In June last year, Russian forces fired warning shots at a British destroyer it alleged to have entered its waters, a claim denied by Britain.
As well as naval exercises, large-scale Russian military exercises are underway with the country’s authoritarian ally Belarus, which lies to the north of Ukraine and also borders The European Union,
