Following a low-intensity explosion near the Golden Temple, police today arrested five people and said they were also involved in two similar blasts within a week. Police did not elaborate on the motive, but said they would probe the “entire deep-rooted conspiracy” and possible connections of those arrested in India and abroad.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav told reporters that the police would investigate whether the blast was the handiwork of a self-radicalised module or it was carried out on someone else’s instructions.

He said a special investigation team would be constituted to probe the matter.

“We will probe the entire deep-rooted conspiracy behind this. We will probe all associates of those arrested in India and abroad and get to the bottom of it,” he said.

The arrested accused have been identified as Azadveer Singh, Amrik Singh, Sahib Singh, Harjeet Singh and Dharminder Singh. He said Azadveer and Amrik were the main culprits, while Sahib, Harjeet and Dharminder supplied the explosives.

The police chief said Amrik’s wife was also being questioned and her role was being probed.

On May 6, a low-intensity blast took place on Heritage Street near the Golden Temple. The second eruption occurred less than 30 hours after the first eruption.

Yadav said the police also recovered 1.10 kg of low-intensity explosives, which are commonly used in making firecrackers.

Sharing more details, Yadav said the first Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was assembled in the bathroom of the inn on May 6 and contained 200 grams of explosives, normally used to make firecrackers, in two energy drink cans. goes. A metal tiffin box was also found filled with the same explosive material.

“All the three containers were kept in a polythene bag. Azadvir went to the terrace of the Heritage Parking building and then hung the polythene bag with a rope at 11 pm on May 6. The first explosion took place at 11.25 pm,” Yadav said.

The second IED was made using two metal bowls, which were joined together in the bathroom of the inn on 7 May.

He said it was placed on the top of the Heritage Parking building at 4.30 am on May 8 and exploded at 6.15 am.

The third blast took place in a deserted area behind the building of the inn.

Yadav also thanked the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee for their cooperation in nabbing the accused.
