BMC asks parents to shift their children from illegal educational institutions

According to representatives of the education department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 30 more schools have received closure letters

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has asked parents to shift their children from here illegal educational institution before the new academic session. In its notification, the civic body said that there are around 210 illegal schools in Mumbai with around 50,000 students enrolled. BMC has warned to register an FIR against the management if these illegal schools are not closed with immediate effect.

Joint Education Commissioner in BMC Ajit Kumbhar said in his order, ‘The city’s education department works on the instructions and rules of the state education department. The state government has issued strict instructions to close these schools. The municipal body has announced the names of illegal schools in the newspaper. “If this is not enough, we will put up banners outside these institutions so that parents know before enrolling their children,” said the Joint Commissioner.

Further, the authorities have confirmed that students enrolled in illegal institutions will get admission in public schools or aided schools. “Education is the constitutional right of every child and the central and state governments, apart from local municipal corporations, are working diligently. However, some schools do not follow the prescribed norms related to toilets, capacity of each class and qualification of teachers,” said the BMC official. He said that many educational institutions used to apply for regularization before the state government, but this year the government has decided to take strict action against them.

Of Mumbai’s 218 schools considered illegal, only 62 have been closed. According to the representatives of the education department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), closure letters of 30 more schools have been received, and other processes are currently being completed. BMC has launched a vigorous drive to crack down on illegal educational institutions in the state. Earlier these schools were asked to be closed by 25 April 2023.

As reported by Hindustan Times, Nitin Dalvi, an education activist said that the process by BMC is slow and punitive action should be taken against the schools. Nitin Dalvi said, “If the fine imposed is not recovered, then necessarily an FIR should be registered and these schools should be closed.”
