BMW CEO Oliver Gipps speaks during the visit of German Minister Robert Habeck

The shortage of semiconductors is likely to remain a problem for the auto industry into 2023, German carmaker BMW chief executive Oliver Gipps said in an interview with the newspaper Neue Zuercher Zeitung (NZZ) published on Monday.

“We are still at the height of the chip shortage,” Gipsy was quoted as saying. “I expect to start seeing the latest improvements next year, but we still have to deal with fundamental shortfalls in 2023.”

BMW said during its annual press briefing in mid-March that it expects the chip shortage to last through 2022.

Gypsy’s comments echoed similar statements on Saturday from Volkswagen CFO Arno Enlitz, who said he expects the supply of chips won’t be able to meet demand until 2024.
