BrahMos Aerospace ‘not considering’ selling missiles to Russia – ‘CEO’s interview misinterpreted’

New Delhi: BrahMos Aerospace – the Indo-Russian aerospace and defense corporation – is not considering selling its missiles to Russia as long as the Russia-Ukraine war continues, highly placed company sources have told ThePrint.

In an interview earlier this month, Rane said the company, which was founded in 1998, was “continually looking at Russia as a market for BrahMos” and that if Russia had bought the missiles earlier, “their would have had much “to use in the present situation”.

“After the ongoing situation in Europe is over, we may get some orders from Russia, especially for the air-launched BrahMos. He has no equivalent. The air-launched BrahMos has no equivalent in the world. I see it as a gamechanger in terms of exports,” Rane had said in his interview.

BrahMos Aerospace was established on 12 February 1998 as a joint venture between the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Moscow’s state-owned rocket design bureau, NPO Mashinostroyenia. India has a 50.5 percent stake in the venture, while the rest is held by Russia.

However, highly placed sources in BrahMos Aerospace termed the subject as “sensitive” and claimed that Rane’s comments were being “misinterpreted”.

“These articles are spreading false news when nothing is being said,” a BrahMos Aerospace source told ThePrint. No official information has been given.”

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine – a development the former says was done to prevent the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, from expanding. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives on both sides and caused large-scale internal displacement in Ukraine. After this, many western countries have imposed many sanctions on Russia.
