Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion Leandro Lo Fatly Shot: Family Lawyer

Brazilian jiu-jitsu great Leandro Lo, eight-time world champion, was fatally shot at a So Paulo club on Sunday, his family’s lawyer said.

Local media reports said an off-duty police officer has been arrested for allegedly shooting a 33-year-old martial arts champion.

Lawyer Eva Siqueira Jr. said Lou was out with friends for a concert in Syria, a sports and social club in Brazil’s largest city, when the attackers approached his desk and began making threatening gestures with a bottle.

Lo, who won the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) world title in five different weight categories from 2012 to 2022 – an all-time record – pinned the man to the ground “to stop the situation and avoid the fight”, Said Siqueira.

He said that Lou’s friends helped both men and urged the attacker to calm down and leave.

“At the same time, the man allegedly turned around, pulled out a gun and shot Leandro in the head,” Sequeira told AFP.

He said the jiu-jitsu champion was taken to the hospital, but was declared brain dead.

The newspaper Folha de So Paulo reported that the So Paulo court ordered the 30-year-old suspect to be detained for 30 days, pending further investigation.

Condolences poured in from fans of Jiu-Jitsu on social media.

Specialty site BJJ Heroes called Low “one of the best pound-for-pound grapplers for capturing a mat.”

With roots in Japanese judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu developed in the South American country in the early 20th century, and is one of the most popular full-contact sports, majoring in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions.
