Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro took an early lead in the early votes of Sunday’s presidential election, ahead of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose Workers’ Party usually enjoys strong support in regions that are slow to report results.

The Superior Electoral Court reported on its website that with 5.6% of the voting machines counting, Mr. Bolsonaro had 53.2% of the valid votes, compared to 46.8% for Lula.

The tough race provides a second chance for both the candidates.

Mr Bolsonaro has vowed to cement a sharply conservative turn in Brazilian politics after the pandemic-ravaged presidency. Mr Lula promised greater social and environmental responsibility, recalling the growing prosperity of his 2003–2010 presidency, before corruption scandals engulfed his Workers’ Party.
