Bridgerton 2: What went wrong about India – and what’s right?

Bridgerton 2 introduced two Indian characters – Kate and Edwina Sharma.

season two bridgerton Last week dropped amidst much hype and anticipation and introduced two new characters – sisters Kate and Edwina Sharma, who recently arrived in London from Bombay. As it is in an alternate historical universe where society was racially integrated, the audience was not surprised to see two native women as the beginnings of society in Regency-era England. The research that Netflix shows conducted before introducing the two Indian characters came as a surprise to many.

Between playing ‘Maruli’ (an instrument that doesn’t exist), reading Ghalib (who was not yet writing in the period when the show was set), and speaking ‘Hindustani’ – to the native audience. found the show a lot to criticize. On Twitter, opinions differed as to what the worst crime was.

“It’s hard to pick a favorite clumsy Indian reference on this bridgerton2But I must ask Edwina Anthony if she has read ‘Guhlib’,” wrote one Twitter user.

The reference to Ghalib, in fact, angered many. Writer Shiv Ramdas pointed out that the famous poet, who was born in 1797, must have been just 16 years old in the time period in which the show is set.

People also made issue of Ghalib’s pronunciation.

On the show, endorsing many of her sister Edwina’s qualities, Kate says she is fluent in both “Marathi and Hindustani” – another point that created a storm online. Given that Hindustani is not a colloquial term, many viewers felt that it would have been better to avoid the show.

In the same scene, Kate says that her sister plays a musical instrument named Maruli. The audience wondered whether the shoemakers meant to say “fife” or flute.

There were many other mistakes that upset the audience

But some things went right on the show – fans were delighted to see Kate sip her tea Cardamom (Cardamom), Turmeric function and much more. Of course, the bonus was coveted sometimes happy sometimes sad Music playing in background.

bridgertonProduced by Shonda Rhimes, is a period drama based on the novels by Julia Quinn. The second season of the hugely popular show debuted on Netflix on March 25. It has reportedly been renewed for a third and fourth season.
