Britain launches world’s largest blood test for 50 types of cancer

Britain’s state-run National Health Service will on Monday launch the world’s largest test of Grail Inc’s flagship Galerie blood test that can be used for more than 50 types of blood tests. cancer before symptoms appear.

The Galerie test looks at the DNA in a patient’s blood to determine if any come from cancer cells. Early cancer diagnosis dramatically increases survival rates.

The NHS said it is looking to recruit 140,000 volunteers in England to see how well the trial worked as part of a randomized control trial. Half of the participants will have their blood sample checked immediately with a gallery test.

“We need to carefully study the GALLERY test to find out whether it can reduce the number of late-stage cancers,” said Peter Sciini, professor of cancer prevention at King’s College London.

“Testing could be a game changer for early cancer detection and we are excited to lead this important research.”

Lung cancer is by far the most common cause of cancer death in the United Kingdom, accounting for about one-fifth of all cancer deaths. The NHS stated that lung, bowel, prostate and breast cancers account for 45% of the United Kingdom’s cancer deaths.

US life science company Illumina Inc last month said it had completed its $7.1 billion acquisition of Grail. Illumina said it would operate Grail separately from its existing business.
