Budget 2022: Nirmala Sitharaman is an advocate of an unsurpassed heritage of Indian weaving, says the fashion fraternity

The sartorial choice of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has always featured an array of handloom pieces from across the country. Known for her love for Indian textiles, Nirmala has always been vocal in promoting handloom sarees. In 2019, she expressed her love for Indian textiles and had also tweeted saying: Silk or cotton, Orissa – Handloom sarees are one of my favorites – colours, weaves, textures, just so good. (sic).

Today, she arrived in Parliament to present the Union Budget 2022 wearing a clay rusty Bomkai (Sambalpuri) sari with a deep maroon border. “It is a matter of great pride that our Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman promotes and wears rich handloom sarees. Today she wore the Jung and Maroon Orissa Bomkai weave in the much-awaited budget. I feel that as a designer who draws inspiration from opulent textiles, we are glad to see our leaders wear classic Indian clothing and promote and highlight our diverse heritage to the youth of India,” Designer Gopi Vaid shares.

A minimalist, Nirmala’s wardrobe has always displayed the length and breadth of the craft of this country. An advocate of an unsurpassed heritage of Indian weaving, Nirmala Sitharaman’s style reflects the ethnicity tradition of finance ministers over time. “The choice of colors reflects the conservatism needed for their role in government and appeal to all sections of society. It is always understated, never done too loudly and brings a sense of pride to the office, showcasing the length and breadth of the craft that this country has to offer,” expresses Narendra Kumar.

Speaking about her outfit of the day, Tamannaah Punjabi Kapoor shares, “Nirmala Sitharaman is usually seen adorning handloom saris in warm tones and the handloom saris adorned in Parliament were simple yet elegant. She paired her ensemble with earrings and gold bangles with minimal accessories and completed her look with a red bindi. Her dress choice is casual, and we love how she accomplishes it with so much confidence. ,

Fashion designer Reena Dhaka believes Nirmala Sitharaman exudes confidence and decency and looks great in a saree. “I loved her color and saree. It is wrapped well. She shows confidence and grace and this is a great look. ,

For fashion designer Sreejit Jeevan, there is something amazing in the way Nirmala Sitharaman defines professionalism with her clothes. “It (Sardar Vikalp) is Indian, very vocal for local and yet professional. The message is very clear. It’s very subtle, and one can miss out on the attention to detail, but details like crisp pleated saris and the red cloth bags used to carry documents make a very unique Indian smart casual for a woman like that. One who has taken his job seriously, but with his own signature of exclusivity,” says Jeevan.

Fashion designer Shruti Sancheti believes Nirmala has always been a champion of Indian weaving, a keen advocate of the unmatched heritage of Indian weaving and crafts. According to Shruti Sancheti, an accomplished woman like Nirmala, her sartorial choices have always made India celebrate. “Always a champion for Indian weaving, she has worn Mangalagiri, Gadwal, Kanjeevaram, Ikat and Kalamkari sarees. For the 2022 budget, which is indeed a significant and highly anticipated one, she is wearing an understated but beautifully woven bomkai (sambalpuri) in an earthen rust with dark red borders, says Sancheti. Has kept the look fierce. Medium yet. She wears what she believes in, that is simplicity, being grounded and relatable to the masses. Always a champion for promoting her heritage, her minimalist sartorial choices are her perennial style statement that is reflected in today’s appearance. ,
