Build women’s hockey team towards Nations Cup by taking lessons from World Cup: Neha Goyal

With the FIH Nations Cup in December this year, the charismatic Indian women’s hockey team midfielder Neha Goel says the team is slowly moving towards the event in Valencia (Spain), taking lessons from the disappointing World The Cup campaign and the bronze medalist performance at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games is part of the training program in Bengaluru.

Neha, who hails from Haryana, said the team is building on these “positive qualities” that will keep her in good stead at big-ticket events.

“I think most of us in the team have gained strong international experience and have grown from strength to strength to tackle tough playing- situations. I think we are ready for better results in the upcoming tournaments. There is a good synergy in the group and that shows how we perform.”

Neha believes that the team’s historic bronze in Birmingham 2022 is a step towards better results to come, who has overcome many hurdles in her personal life to make a career out of hockey.

“The SAI campus has a great atmosphere with both the Indian teams and junior squads camping. Apart from the good facilities, there is an atmosphere of positivity and both the teams motivate each other to perform well. We are lucky that way,” Neha said.

Talking about the positive attitude of the team, Neha said, “If you look at our performance in the last two years, we have been consistently performing well against the top teams in the world. There have also been matches in which the result has not been favorable for us, so we are working towards getting a favorable result by coming back from the disappointment.”

He further insisted on the team’s World Cup exit, where things did not go their way, but he rallied to bounce back from the disappointment of losing the crossover match against Spain.

“It is never easy to come back as a team from this kind of disappointment. We lost to home team Spain by one goal. But recovering from a setback is the strength of the team. We tell ourselves that every match is a new beginning and we can fight till the last second for the best result. It helped us come back after the match against Australia in the Commonwealth Games as well.
