Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga on Sunday after beating Wolfsburg 4-2 despite Joshua Kimmich being sent off.

Kimmich was sent off in the 54th with his second yellow card, but Wolfsburg were unable to make their dominance count as the visitors were given a lesson in efficiency.

Kingsley Coman scored twice and Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala added two more as Bayern also needed goalkeeper Yann Sommer to secure the team’s first Bundesliga win of the year.

This was enough for Bayern to take a point clear of Union Berlin.

Wolfsburg had 22 shots on goal compared to nine for the 10-time defending champions.

Wolfsburg pressed from the outset but Bayern struck first in the ninth minute when Koman’s cross for Müller was saved by everyone and headed inside the far post.

The common was not over. The France winger found Joao Cancelo’s cross to make it 2-0 five minutes later with a volley, just after Wolfsburg missed a great chance to level.

Müller, making his 427th appearance for Bayern to equal Gerd Müller’s record, celebrated by heading Kimmich’s free kick for Bayern’s third in only the 19th.

Despite the goals, Wolfsburg remained competitive and pulled one back through Jakub Kaminski before the break.

The home side missed two good chances in the second half before Kimmich was sent off with his second yellow card for a foul on Maximilian Arnold.

Wolfsburg enjoyed more possession but failed to make it big before Musiala snatched Bayern’s fourth with a fine individual effort in the 73rd.

Mattias Swanberg pulled one back for Wolfsburg in the 81st and Yannick Gerhardt thought he had made it 4–3 three minutes later, only to see the goal disallowed via VAR for an apparent foul in the buildup was given.

Earlier, second-half goals from Jens Stege and Marvin Daksch earned Werder Bremen a 2–0 win in Stuttgart and the visitors’ second win in a row.

This saw Bremen promoted to eighth place, while Stuttgart fell back into the relegation zone. Stuttgart have not won a game since mid-November.
