American forwards Jordan Payfolk and Sheraldo Becker scored again on Sunday to propel Union Berlin back to the top of the Bundesliga in a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg.

Becker set up Payfolk to score in the 55th minute, then the Surinamese forward ran clear in the 77th minute to seal the victory, giving Union a two-point lead over Borussia Dortmund after seven rounds.

Team fans gave a warm welcome to Timo Baumgartl for the first time in five months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. The 26-year-old defender’s last league game was against Eintracht Frankfurt in April.

Former union star Max Kruse was spared from welcoming fans as he was not in favor of Wolfsburg coach Nico Kovac, who said the former Germany forward would never play for the club again.

The home team got off to a better start but failed to make a breakthrough. Wolfsburg’s defense recovered enough to prevent the ball from reaching Union’s swift payfolk and Baker.

Payfolk, whose full name is Thiosson-Jordan Sibachchu, narrowly widened after the break. He then scooped the ball over as Ursa began with intent again from Fischer’s side. At the other end, Maximilian Arnold went closer.

Then the moment that the fans of the house were waiting for. Baker showed momentum against his marker and scored with a dazzling header before crossing for the payfolk. It was the American’s third Bundesliga goal in six appearances since the summer switch from Young Boys.

Baker sealed it when he shouldered Paul Seguin’s pass after Arnold lost the ball and ran to finish quietly for his sixth goal of the season.

Both Payfolk and Baker were given standing ovations when they finished in 87th place.
