Bureaucrat Shares Thoughtful Tweet On Technology Dependence, Jwala Gutta Agrees

The bureaucrat shared a picture of an old telephone to emphasize his point

Undoubtedly, technology has made our lives easier and more convenient. However, as they say, excess of anything is bad. We have become so dependent on technology that we are not using our brain to its full potential. Commenting on the same change, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Awanish Sharan shared a touching post about how simple life was before the evolution of smartphones and shiny gadgets.

Through his tweet, Mr. Sharan highlighted how the evolution of smartphones has affected human beings to such an extent that we are not ‘free anymore’.

To emphasize his point, he shared a picture of a black and white telephone on a pedestal. The text below reads, “When the phone was tied with strings – humans were free.”

Since being shared on February 17, the tweet has garnered over 1 lakh views, 2500 likes and over 220 retweets. Mr Sharan’s views resonated with most internet users, who agreed with the post and left a variety of comments.

Badminton player Jwala Gutta also reacted to the post and shared, “Agree.”

Some even turned nostalgic and said they were missing the ‘good old days’. One user wrote, “Yes. For some strange reason, I want to go back to the 1960’s and 70’s. People were really free then. Now we only have the illusion of freedom.

“How profound is this line,” commented another. A third said, “Currently people are in bondage, never separated from smartphones. Hidden cost.” A fifth said, “Phone addiction is becoming worse than drugs by the day.”

However, another user disagreed with the post and talked about how smartphones have made our lives easier. He wrote, “A great quote on the surface to suggest that we are prisoners of the smartphone… but no! Try ordering a cab in the middle of the night from the roadside using a wired phone, or using a translator in a foreign country, or 1000 other such examples… Smartphones are true freedom!”
