BWF World Junior Championships: Anupama Upadhyay, Unnati Hooda Advance to Round of 32

Indian shuttlers Anupama Upadhyay and Unnati Hooda entered the women’s singles round of 32. World The Junior Badminton Championship 2022 registered a hard-fought victory here on Tuesday.

World number three in the junior badminton rankings and junior championship top seed Anupama defeated Yi Ting Elsa Lai of Singapore 19-21, 21-10, 21-9 in her round of 64.

On the other hand, world junior No. 5 and fifth seed, Unnati defeated Sri Lanka’s Ranithama Liyanage 21-11, 19-21, 21-7. Anupama and Unnati both got byes in the first round.

Rakshita Sri Ramraj also registered a 21-16, 21-12 win over 16th seed Lucie Krulova of Czech Republic. World number four Indian men’s singles player S. Shankar Muthusamy Subramaniam also ramped up his campaign with a win over Singapore shuttler Remus Ng in the 64th round.

However, Bharat Raghav lost his second round match against top seed Alex Lanier of France 14-21, 15-21. Aayush Shetty also crashed out after losing 22-20, 15-21, 18-21 to Lau Joon Hui Marcus of Singapore.

Meanwhile, the mixed doubles pair of Samarveer and Radhika Sharma continued their stellar form from the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championship 2022 earlier this month. The Indian pair made a surprise comeback by defeating the 10th seeded German pair of Jonathan Dresp and Anna Mezikowski 18-21, 21-19, 21-17.

Shreya Balaji and Srinidhi Narayanan were the only other Indian doubles team to make it to the day as they beat Amber Boonen and Tammy Van Vontergham 21-13, 21-8.

Israni Baruah and Devika Sihag bowed out of the women’s doubles while the men’s doubles pair of Arsh Mohammad and Abhinav Thakur and Nicolas Raj and Tushar Suveer were also eliminated.

Notably, former world No 1 Saina Nehwal is the only Indian to have won the Junior World Championship crown till date, while rising star Lakshya Sen was India’s last medalist in 2018 with a bronze medal.

The BWF World Junior Championships was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Junior Championships will conclude on October 30.
