Cabinet approves continuation of Swachh Bharat Mission

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the continuation of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) till 2025-26 for sustainable results. government will spend 1,41,600 crore for the mission, which is 2.5 times more than the first phase of the mission.

The second phase of Swachh Bharat aims to eliminate open defecation, including faecal sludge management, in all cities with a population of less than 1 lakh.

The implementation of the components of the mission will be done in a structured and time-bound manner, including an in-depth analysis of the required infrastructure, detailed 5-year action plans and annual action plans with timelines.

The scheme will focus on two key areas:

Sustainable Cleanliness:

Ensuring full access to sanitation facilities to serve the additional population migrating from rural to urban areas in search of employment and better opportunities in the next 5 years. This will be done through the construction of over 3.5 lakh individual, community and public toilets.

Complete liquid waste management in cities with a population of less than 1 lakh – a new component introduced under SBM-Urban 2.0 will ensure that systems and processes are in place in every city so that all wastewater is safely contained, collected, Can be transported and treated and there is no waste water. pollutes our water bodies.

Sustainable Solid Waste Management:

100% source segregation of waste with Functional Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) in every city with focus on phased elimination of single use plastic

Establishment of construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing facilities and deployment of mechanical sweepers in National Clean Air Program (NCAP) cities and cities with population of more than 5 lakhs.

Renovation of all old dump sites, to free 14,000 acres of closed land lying beneath 150 million tonnes of old waste.
