CAF ban Egypt, Morocco after Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final ‘fight’

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended several Egyptian and Moroccan players and fined them after their “fight” ended in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Sanctions fell on Wednesday on the eve of Egypt’s date with hosts Cameroon in the semi-finals following a locker room dispute following Sunday’s 2-1 win against Morocco.

The seven-time winners will not have assistant coach Rosario de Sa, and Marwan Daud will be left to play at Yaounde.

The CAF said the pair began a match suspension from Wednesday.

The problem began after “a dispute between Egyptian assistant coach Rogerio Paulo dos Santos Cesar de Sa and Moroccan FA president Mr Fauji Lecza”, the CAF said in a statement from its Cairo headquarters.

“After a simple fight, Moroccan player Sofien Boufal and Egyptian player Marwan Mustafa Daoud were identified,” the CAF said.

Dawood’s suspension came because of “his violent conduct”, while Rosario De Sa’s was due to “using an obscene gesture”.

The CAF also suspended Moroccan players Soufian Chakla and Soufian Boufal for “violent behaviour”. The pair crash out of Morocco’s World Cup play-off game against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in March.

The confederation fined the Moroccan Federation $10,000 and the Egyptian Football Association $25,000.

It also imposed an additional $100,000 fine ($50,000 suspended) on Egypt for violating the Cup of Nations’ media protocol and instructions when their pre-match press conference failed to honor commitment.
