Calcutta High Court refuses to interfere in Bengal Panchayat election process

The Calcutta High Court on March 28 declined to interfere with the panchayat election process in West Bengal, while holding that there is substance in petitioner Shubhendu Adhikari’s dispute over the seat reservation criteria for the upcoming 2023 local body elections.

Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice R. Bhardwaj said that any interference at this stage with regard to the PIL filed by Shri Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, may lead to postponement of the Panchayat elections. State.

The court refused to interfere in the panchayat elections in West Bengal at this stage and said that Mr. Adhikari’s claim on the use of different criteria for reservation of seats in different categories has merit.

The court left it to the State Election Commission to decide on the points raised by the BJP MLA on such reservation of seats.

Panchayat elections in the state are likely to be held by the middle of this year.
