As national elections approach, public expenditure… MoreAs national elections approach, public spending in India has picked up. The government is counting on building infrastructure to raise people’s income and support economic growth. Speeding up highway construction has been in the spotlight with the Centre’s aim to build a record 45 km of highways on an average per day in 2023-24. This will increase to 16,000 km during the year, surpassing the last high of 13,298 km achieved in 2020-21 at a rate of 36.4 km per day. After that highway construction had slowed down, with our daily rate falling to 29 km and 24 km in 2021-22 and 2022-23 respectively. Let us see whether India’s infrastructure development can drive economic growth.
