Canada lifts working hours limit for international students, what it means for Indians

Canada is one of the top study destinations among Indian students, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs data. In the first half of this year, more than 60,000 students went to Canada for education, indicating a significant increase in the years to come. There are many reasons why international students choose to study here, including world-class education, a multicultural environment, a better lifestyle, stronger government policies, and now a new work-hours policy.

Due to the long standing bilateral relations between India And Canada, the rules have always been supportive of Indian students. For example, with regard to visa delays impacted by the pandemic, the High Commission of Canada assured that they will take various measures to reduce waiting times to help Indian students get their student visas at the earliest.

The Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship also recently announced a temporary lifting of the 20-hour-a-week work limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off-campus during class sessions. This limit has been removed from November 15, 2022 to December 31, 2023. During this time, international students who are in Canada and have off-campus work authorization on their study permit may follow the 20-hour-per-week rule. The new policy will only apply to students who are studying full-time and who have submitted a study permit application before October 7, 2022 and are awaiting approval.

This will help the Canadian economy cope with the labor shortage and help international students earn extra money. This change reflects the importance the Canadian government attaches to the contribution of international students to the economy. As of July, Canadian employers were looking to fill about 1 million new jobs. This is an excellent opportunity for international students to earn global work experience while studying to find a suitable role and be ready for full-time employment upon graduation.

better work experience

With the rule change, more students will be able to find work in their preferred domain and gain relevant work experience before graduating. In addition, this rule also protects international students from exploitation by their employers.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data shows that in 2021, Indian students constituted the largest student population among international students. The new policy is a welcome change for Indian students in Canada, though temporary.

However, students should not rush and consider their action plan carefully before taking the final decision.
