The Canary Islands government and IGN said in a joint statement that volcanic activity “remains intense” and a new crater was discovered on Saturday.
“It doesn’t look like it’s nearing its end, because millions of cubic meters of lava are pouring out of the volcano,” Canary Islands President Angel Victor Torres told a news conference on Sunday.
In a positive sign, the technical director of the Canary Islands’ Emergency Volcano Response Committee, Miguel Negal Morcuende, said on Saturday that the air quality had improved enough to warrant the removal of local stay-at-home measures.
Torres said the new desalination plants would replace an irrigation link broken by the volcano to ensure water flows to the south of the island.
“We recognize sadness, but it’s teaching us a lesson. Because when you go to someone who has lost everything, they are always ready to deal with the situation. They don’t give up. . are,” said Torres.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has pledged more than $238 million (206 million euros) in aid to the island.
“Next Tuesday, the cabinet will approve a very powerful series of measures to respond to the problem of infrastructure reconstruction, water supply, employment, agriculture, the tourism sector and financial gains,” Sanchez said on Sunday.
