Medical career aspirants and their parents in violence-hit Manipur have urged the National Testing Agency to postpone the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled for May 7.

But they are not able to reach these centers due to unstable situation apart from one Indefinite curfew in entire valley and some of the surrounding hill districts.

“It is impossible for our wards to appear in the NEET exam tomorrow (Sunday) in view of the chaos and mayhem all around. We urge the concerned authorities to postpone the examination for the candidates in Manipur and conduct it when normalcy returns,” said a representative of a parents’ group.

Manipur plunged into violenceThe arson and vandalism followed a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ on May 3 to protest against the move to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the dominant Meitei community concentrated in the Imphal Valley.

The eviction drive launched by the BJP-led state government in February has also been a factor in the caste violence. The campaign against opium cultivation in “occupied” forests was seen as targeting the Kuki-Zomi tribal people.
