Cannes 2023: Union Minister Murugan wore ‘Veshti’, tricolor shirt on the red carpet

Cannes [France]May 17 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan, who is leading the Indian delegation at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, on Tuesday opted for traditional attire at the red carpet.

The shirt that Murugan wore on the red carpet had the national flag on the left and the G20 logo on the right. They combined it with ‘Veshti’ to represent their culture on a global scale.

“The embroidery on the shirt is done by my local tailor. I am extremely proud to wear the tricolor on my chest,’ Murugan told ANI earlier.

“Since we are doing so many events and showcasing our legacy in the G20 year-long plan, it is only fitting that we let the world know about it,” he said.

Accompanying Murugan on the red carpet at the French Riviera were some of the most well-known names from the world of Indian cinema. He had gone to the event last year as well and India was a country of honour.

Like last year when India had an array of celebrities on the red carpet, this time also Indian filmmaker Guneet Monga of Oscar award winning ‘The Elephant Whispers’ fame, Indian actor, model and Miss World 2017 winner Manushi Chhillar, Esha Gupta – Acclaimed actress of Indian cinema and Kangbam Tomba – Acclaimed Manipuri actor will walk the red carpet.

Four Indian films have made it to the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. Kanu Behl’s ‘Agra’ will be his second film which will have its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. His 2014 debut film, ‘Titli’ was unveiled in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section.

Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Kennedy’ is being screened at midnight screenings and Nehemich’s in the La Cinef section of the Festival de Cannes. Apart from these, a number of Indian films have been earmarked for screening at the Marche du Films.

Ishanhou, a restored Manipuri film, will be screened in the ‘Classics’ section. The film was first shown in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section of the festival in 1991 and the National Film Archives of India has preserved its film reels. Manipur State Film Development Society got the film restored through Film Heritage Foundation and Prasad Film Labs.

India will continue its endeavor to become the content hub of the world, and a one-stop destination from film making to post-production, including graphics and animation and other modern technologies and equipment. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur had talked about this during his visit to the festival last year.

This year’s special focus in the India Pavilion will be on India’s culture and heritage. The theme of this year’s pavilion is based on Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. It has been designed by National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad with the theme ‘Showcasing India’s Creative Economy’ for the global community.

The design of the mandap is inspired by the Saraswati Yantra, an abstract representation of Goddess Saraswati, the protector of wisdom, music, art, speech, knowledge and learning. The colors of the mandap take inspiration from the vibrant colors of the national flag of India – saffron, white, green and blue.

Saffron for the country’s strength and courage, white for inner peace and truth, green for fertility, growth and display of the auspiciousness of the land, and blue for the law of righteousness and truth. India has a vast pool of talent and the India Pavilion will provide a platform for the Indian film community to strike distribution deals, greenlight scripts, produce collaborations and network with the world’s leading entertainment and media players.

Among the top highlights of last year’s festival were R. It was the premiere of Madhavan’s film Rocketry.

Anurag Thakur, who will not be physically present at the ceremony, will address the inauguration through a video message. (ANI)
