‘Cannot spoil academic environment’: BJP MLA asks students not to enter college premises in hijabs

The ongoing controversy over hijab in Karnataka took a new turn on Monday with BJP MLA Raghupati Bhat saying students who are protesting and seeking permission to wear hijab in classes should be allowed to enter the college premises only. Said when they decide to give up the hijab.

He said, “Otherwise we have clearly told them not to come to the college and spoil the academic environment.” Meanwhile, the students have filed a petition in the High Court regarding this matter.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting at Government Girls Pre-University College, Udupi, Raghupati Bhat said: “A meeting has been held with parents, lecturers and school development and management committee regarding the dispute. The students who wanted to wear the hijab along with the uniform were also called… four of them attended with their parents.”

They were told that hijab could not be allowed and they would have to wait till the committee’s report was submitted.

They can come to campus in hijab and have to take off the hijab in the classroom.

“Fifty percent of them agreed, it seems. They told us they would contact us by tomorrow (Tuesday) on this issue.”

The order said that the old guidelines should be continued. Students can attend classes without hijab if they wish.

“We have clearly told them that, otherwise you should come from tomorrow only when you have decided to attend class without hijab. You cannot disturb the academic atmosphere of the college by coming to the college premises. We have also informed the police about the entry of media and other organizations in the campus.”

“There is no place for confusion now. Anyone who follows discipline, let them come to college.”

Meanwhile, one of the students, seeking permission to attend classes wearing a hijab, has moved the High Court. Student Resham Farooq has requested to declare wearing of Hijab as a fundamental right under Articles 14 and 25 of the Constitution.

Advocate Shatabhish Shivana, Arnav. A Baglawadi and Abhishek Janardhan have filed a petition seeking court’s permission to allow students to attend classes wearing hijab without interference from the college management.

He has also sought an interim order from the High Court regarding students attending classes wearing hijab.
