Capt Amarinder’s ‘Proposal’ Is The ‘Welcome Declaration’ BJP Was Hoping For In Punjab

As Captain Amarinder Singh concludes a bitter chapter with the Congress and looks set to re-enter the Punjab elections with a new outfit, sending sentiments to the BJP for a possible alliance, the saffron party has to deal with it. Significant gains are expected. Though Amarinder’s proposals carry a ‘sankalp of farmers’ movement’, the Punjab BJP believes that a ‘sankalp’ can be worked out.

Punjab BJP general secretary Subhash Sharma said, “The captain expressed his desire to forge a pre-poll alliance with the BJP, a welcome announcement. Any alliance that leads to the welfare of the people of Punjab is acceptable to us.” ‘

With the Akali Dal snapping ties with the BJP and the anti-agriculture law marginalizing the state leadership, BJP leaders hope Capt can provide a face to sell alternative political alliances to Congress, AAP and SAD-BSP .

In the 2017 elections, the BJP-SAD alliance had won 18 out of 117 seats, while the BJP won three constituencies. The BJP had claimed that the anti-incumbency wave against the Akalis during the 2017 elections had curtailed the chances of the alliance.

Sharma said that despite the turmoil in the Punjab Congress, the popularity of the Captain remained the same. “More importantly, he takes a very strong stand on nationalist issues, about which the BJP also feels strong,” Sharma said. “In Punjab, Capt. Sir He is of immense stature and is respected by all communities. If there is an alliance, we will become a strong force in the state,” Sharma said.

He said that the ongoing tussle between CM Channi and PPCC chief Navjot Sidhu will continue and their differences will come to the fore in the coming few months and AAP is still faceless claiming to be the next best option. “So, this alliance will only be a benefit to the people,” he remarked.

Sharma acknowledged that there may be some resentment against the party among a section of people at the grassroots level, but there are some areas where the BJP remains strong despite perceived resistance from the people. “The alliance will be talked about by the central leadership but at the grassroots level, BJP will work with those parties which can think for the benefit of Punjab,” Sharma said.

On the proposal of the Captain’s farmers’ movement, Sharma said that the Center is already in talks with the farmers. “If efforts continue in this direction, one can hope for a solution that will benefit the farmers,” Sharma said.
