Casper Roode defeated Cameron Norey 6-0, 6-2 to win the ATP San Diego title, his fifth title of the year and his first on hard court.

The Norwegian, who performed brilliantly on clay courts this year, included three titles in three weeks at Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbühel in July, battling tough opponents to reach the title bout in California.

After a three-set victory over former world number three Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals, second seed Ruud was in control against Nori – who had defeated number 1 seed Andre Rublev in the semi-finals.

He broke Nori’s first serve game and roared for victory in the opening set, losing just three points on his serve.

Norie looked quick to start the second set, but Roode took a 4-2 lead with a crisp backhand passing winner and confidently closed the match after just 62 minutes.

Rudd, who had won only one ATP title before this year, became the first player to win five titles this season.

The win will move him to eighth place in the race to Turin as he tries to qualify for the ATP Finals to be held in the Italian city on November 14-21.
