CAT cut-off expected to fall in 2021, 85+ percentile scorers may get calls from IIMs: Experts

Common Admission Test – CAT 2021 Answer Key is expected to be released anytime soon. Reports claim that the CAT answer key will be released on Monday – December 6 at iimcat.ac.in. Students can estimate their marks on the basis of answer key. A window will be provided to the candidates to raise objections and the final answer key will be released after considering all the objections thus raised.

CAT 2021 result will be based on the final answer key. On the basis of marks obtained in CAT result 2021, candidates will be eligible to get admission in top B-schools across the country including premium IIMs. CAT 2021 cut off for admission to top B-schools may see a fall this year.

“CAT 2021 had less questions as compared to last year. Fewer choices in terms of number of questions made the paper even more difficult. The cut-off is bound to go down this year as the long passages and cumbersome LRDI sets in the VARC section were time consuming due to which less efforts were made by the candidates. The cut-off, which is the minimum percentile required in each section to be considered for call, may be around 85 percentile,” said Amit Poddar Sr. Regional Head Time

Dilip Jaiswal, co-founder of College Disha said that for unreserved category students, the cut-off for IIM-Ahmedabad could be 80 per cent, for Bangalore 85 per cent, for IIM Kozhikode 60 per cent. He said that the management schools of IIT Delhi, IIT Madras are likely to accept candidates with more than 95 per cent marks.

Cut-off does not guarantee calls but is minimum required to receive calls from top B schools like IIMs, SP Jain, MDI, FMS, etc. The overall cut-off in these B schools is normally more than 95 per cent. For general category students. But these are not the only colleges that take CAT scores. Colleges like IMT, IMI, XIM, DSE and some IITs require around 90 percentile for the call.

CAT 2021: What are the options for low scorers?

If one is expecting around 85 percentile then one can apply in colleges like FOUR, GLIM, TAPMI, LBS, IMT Nagpur, BIMTECH, IFMR, LIBA, etc. Candidates expecting around 60-70 percentile can look for other exams. Like SNAP, NMAT, CMAT etc., Poddar said.

“With a total of 5,100 seats available in IIMs, over 2,31,000 candidates have registered for the exam, giving a success rate of only 2.21 per cent. Thus, if one does not score well in CAT, one should always be aware of the alternatives as his/her plan B. An emerging alternative that many candidates are opting for is the globally recognized MBA programs available within India. CAT 2021 was successfully conducted on 28 November 2021 in three shifts at 438 exam centers spread across 156 cities in India. Out of 2.30 lakh registered qualified candidates around 1.92 lakh candidates appeared in the examination. The overall attendance was around 83 per cent. Of the 1.92 lakh candidates who appeared for the exam, 35 percent are women, 65 percent men and two candidates represent transgender.
