The CBI had to curtail its probe into a case of cattle smuggling in the state on Thursday after Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal complained of chest pain, an official said. He said Mandal was taken to the government-run SSKM Hospital, reached the CBI office at Nizam’s Palace here at around 9.30 am and interrogated him for nearly four hours, he said.

“The Investigating Officer interrogated him in three shifts. He was asked questions related to his alleged involvement in the cattle scam. It was during one session that he complained of uneasiness and wanted to see a doctor. We allowed him to go,” he told PTI. Birbhum district president was taken to the emergency ward and then to Woodburn block for medical examination, a senior hospital official said.

The investigating agency had earlier summoned Mandal for questioning several times, but he did not appear even once, citing ill health. The CBI had on September 21, 2020 registered a case against BSF Commandant Satish Kumar and several others in connection with illegal cattle trade along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, allegedly in connivance with public servants.

The alleged kingpin of the racket, Mohammad Inamul Haque, was arrested from New Delhi in November 2020.
