On July 24, 2022, the newly appointed Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Nitin Gupta said that speedy redressal of grievances of taxpayers is the top priority of the tax department.

In his message on the occasion of Income Tax Day, he said that the tax department has made the highest ever amount of Rs 14.09 lakh crore in the financial year ended March 31, 2022 due to streamlining of policies and procedures that make compliance easier for taxpayers. Tax collection is recorded.

“However, we cannot rest on our honor and need to work hard to maintain this momentum,” he added. “In the true spirit of the Taxpayers’ Charter, speedy redressal of taxpayers’ grievances will remain a top priority area.”

CBDT, the tax administration arm of the government, will continue to actively engage with taxpayers and other stakeholders and use their feedback to improve processes.

Mr Gupta said that the economy has witnessed tremendous changes in several sectors in the last few years, including increased digitisation, emergence of new categories of businesses and new asset classes.

“Today’s taxpayers desire ease of compliance and speedy redressal of their issues,” he said. “For such changes, the department has redesigned its policies and revamped its procedures with the aim of enhancing the convenience of the taxpayers and bringing more transparency in its functioning.” He said that CBDT is a competent and service provider.

Stating that the Income Tax Department is not a monolithic entity, he said that there are many areas of technical expertise and differentiation which are being administered by committed cadres of officers and officers.

“Behind the front end handling assessment, grievance redressal and taxpayer services, there are dedicated personnel responsible for areas such as policy formulation, re-skilling, and re-orientation to the emerging needs of stakeholders, maintaining technical architecture, etc. Huh.” They said.

“They play a largely significant role in the change management that the department has been able to achieve successfully over the years.” Mr Gupta, who took over as the new chief of CBDT late last month, said that the tax department needs to follow a service-oriented approach, strengthened by rights values and ethics, innovation, collaboration and flexibility. .

“Let this compass of taxpayer convenience continue as the guiding force as we chart a new course in an atmanirbhar India,” he said.
