CBI arrests 11 after election violence in West Bengal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested 11 people in connection with the violence after the assembly elections in West Bengal.

According to the central probe agency, seven persons were arrested on Sunday and four were arrested on Saturday in connection with the ongoing investigation into two separate cases related to violence and other crimes in West Bengal.

“The CBI had registered these cases on the orders of the Calcutta High Court and took over the investigation of cases registered earlier by the state police,” an agency official said.

The CBI has registered over 30 FIRs related to post-poll violence, and filed at least three chargesheets in incidents of post-poll violence. On August 19, a five-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court had directed the CBI to prove the incidents of post-poll violence related to murder and sexual harassment. The West Bengal government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the order of the Calcutta High Court.
