The CBI questioned Pandey for his alleged role in ‘influencing the complainant’.Param Bir Singh) while the trial of the case was going on in the Bombay High Court’.
Pandey was not available for comment.
Last November, Singh had called Pandey to discuss the ongoing investigation against him initiated by the state government.
Singh had recorded their WhatsApp conversation without Pandey’s knowledge.
In the conversation, Pandey overheard Singh suggesting to withdraw his complaint against the former Deshmukh and offered to mediate between him and the state for an amicable solution. Pandey was the DGP of Maharashtra Police when the talks took place and he was interrogating Singh on the instructions of the state government.
Singh had attached the transcript of the conversation along with a petition filed before the high court to quash the ongoing probe against him by the state government. Singh had also requested the court to direct the CBI to probe the attempt to sabotage the ongoing CBI probe against Deshmukh.
Last March, the Maharashtra government removed Singh from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner following a dispute over an explosive-laden vehicle parked outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s building in south Mumbai. It was pitched by Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waaze, who was heading the CIU cell of Mumbai Police and reporting directly to Singh. Singh and Vaze allegedly misled the government about the investigation of the case.
Singh was unhappy with his transfer and wrote a letter to the chief minister alleging that Deshmukh, the then home minister, had asked Vaze to illegally collect Rs 100 crore from orchestra bar owners in the city. Later four petitions were filed in the High Court seeking an independent inquiry based on Singh’s letter. The court asked the CBI to conduct a probe, which led to the registration of a corruption FIR against Deshmukh.
