CBSE to use blockchain technology to secure board related documents

NS Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) It will use a blockchain technology to ensure that educational documents are recorded “in a secure and tamper-free manner”.

The document can be used by various educational institutions at the time of admission for higher studies and for verification by companies seeking job offers. It can also be used by the institutes for online counseling.

It can be accessed by students, educational institutions, employers through official websites like – cbse.certchain.nic.in or cbse.gov.in. They have to verify by entering the basic details like roll number, date of birth, exam year, exam type and student name. Once the details are validated, the marks details of the student are displayed.

The board has collaborated with the Center of Excellence in Blockchain Technology, National Informatics Center under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, to launch the technology.

The certificates will be recorded in a linked chain structure. “The result certificates are kept at different places in a distributed manner, involving multiple stakeholders, to protect it from any attempt at tampering,” the board said in an official notice.

CBSE has made available the digitally signed certificates of class 10 and 12 for the year 2019-2021 and will gradually carry forward the certificates of the previous years in the coming months. After new certificates are issued, the digitally signed certificates will be sent to a blockchain-based system to create an additional secure link.

“One of the admission challenges is the verification of the authenticity of the certificates produced by the candidates for admission, job, loan etc. Verification of the correctness and genuineness of the certificate with the respective universities or boards requires considerable effort and processing time. Hence most of the time, institutes/organizations insist on the production of original certificates by the candidates. Academic {Blockchain} Documents (ABCD) address these challenges with respect to verification of documents submitted by the candidates,” explains CBSE.

The network has been established with nodes in Bangalore, Pune and Jaipur and is currently managed by the National Informatics Center (NIC) at its data centers.
