Center appoints new Defense Secretary, Census Commissioner in the latest reshuffle of IAS officers

New Delhi: In a major administrative restructuring, the government on Wednesday reshuffled 16 IAS officers working at the Centre. New secretaries have been appointed in 15 ministries, and an announcement has been made for the new Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Financial Services Secretary Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed as the successor of Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj. Bajaj will retire on November 30. Vivek Joshi, a 1989 batch IAS officer of Haryana cadre, will take over as the Financial Services Secretary.

Meanwhile, the government has appointed Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, a 1995 batch Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer, as the Registrar General of India and the Census Commissioner in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In a top-level bureaucratic reshuffle, Road Transport and Highways Secretary Armane Giridhar has been made the new Defense Secretary. A 1988-batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, Giridhar will replace Ajay Kumar, who retires this month.

Alka Upadhyay, a 1990 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport.

Nagendra Nath Sinha, a 1987 batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, has been appointed Steel Secretary. He will replace Sanjay Kumar Singh who will be on December 31.

The government has appointed all of them as ‘officers on special duty’ for two to three months before taking full charge as secretaries.

New appointments are usually made one month before a current secretary retires. But this time the government has announced the appointments soon. The officers who are currently working in important departments and ministries know their successors at least two months before retirement.
