Center issues final notification for delimitation of Delhi wards, clears way for municipal elections

The Home Ministry on Tuesday issued a gazette notification for rescheduling of municipal wards in Delhi, paving the way for civic polls in the national capital.

According to a gazette notification citing a September 10 statement, the government has “fixed the total number of seats in the corporation to be 250, out of which 42 seats have been reserved for members of the Scheduled Castes.”

In accordance with Section 3 and Section 5 of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Act, 1957, which were amended this year (Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022) (10 of 2022) also provides for the determination of the number of seats for councillors. Is. It states that the number of seats reserved for members of the Scheduled Castes in a corporation by the central government.

“The Delimitation Committee has completed its exercise with regard to drafting the Delimitation Order and submitted its report to the Central Government on August 12, 2022,” the notice said.

The notification comes a day after the delimitation committee submitted its report to the Centre.

Municipal elections in the city are to be held from April this year. Elections were put on hold before Delhi State Election Commissioner SK Srivastava had to announce the schedule on March 8 because of the Centre’s plan to reconnect the three civic bodies.

The BJP, which ruled Delhi for more than a decade before the amalgamation of the three municipal corporations, AAP and Congress, have started preparations for the MCD elections.

In July this year, the Home Ministry had constituted a three-member panel for fresh delimitation of municipal wards. The panel was headed by State Election Commissioner Vijay Dev, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Pankaj Kumar Singh and Additional Commissioner of MCD Randhir Sahai.

The last elimination exercise was conducted in 2016 with 272 wards, each with an average population of 60,000, with a variation of 10–15 per cent.

Ward boundaries have been prepared on the basis of provisional EB maps of Census-2011 provided by Directorate of Census Operations, Delhi.
